Community building

Refugees live in isolated camps far from towns and local inclusion. As newcomers in Europe, they need community the most. Through language cafes with local students, integration events, cultural exchanges and sports days we create a more united and welcoming community.

Since March 2017 we have run several cycles of a Twinning project to facilitate the integration of refugees and asylum seekers into local society. We match refugee families with members of the local community to foster long-lasting relationships that can make a positive difference in the lives of the individuals and their community.

For both locals and refugees, the project provides a broadening of social networks and cultural boundaries, and lessens the threat of isolation. Through these encounters we help newcomers adjust faster to their new community, and give Greeks the opportunity to learn about the refugee situation, creating a more welcoming society.

The friendships developed during the project continue beyond its boundaries, as twinned families see each other in their spare time!

To create long-term success, integration projects such as the Twinning require steady reinforcement through meaningful activities.
